Home Study
Introduction & Overview:
Welcome to Tom Foley Associates, Inc. and our
“Home Study” continuing education division. We appreciate your interest in
our Home Study Courses and know that you will find the available courses
interesting and challenging.
All courses have received the approval from the
Michigan Certification Board for Addiction Professionals, MCBAP, and meets the
criteria for the continuing education requirements for initial certification and
re-certification.
Course materials will be mailed to the individual
after all fees have been paid in full. Purchasers of Home Study Courses must
read the course requirements and the complete text of the manual before
attempting to complete the post test.
Upon completion of the course. the individual who
purchased the course must mail,
All courses must be
completed within three (3) months from the date of purchase.
A certificate of completion will be issued to the
individual who has purchased the course from Tom Foley Associates, Inc. when all
of the course requirements have been met. Certificates of completion will be
issued within two weeks from the date the completed course is received at our
office.
Tom Foley Associates, Inc., maintains the exclusive
right of determination for course completion. Individuals who purchase the
course and fail to meet the course requirements will be notified of their
failure to meet the course requirements and be advised of specific requirements
necessary to achieve a certificate of completion. The individual will be given
one additional opportunity to meet the course requirements.
Individuals who fail to meet the course requirement after a second attempt will be given a “Fail” score. Further attempts to achieve the course requirements will require the individual to repurchase the course and begin the process in the same manner as a first time purchase.
Home Study Courses
HS #352 Adolescent Substance Abuse Treatment Guidelines
This
home study course will provide guidelines for the treatment of alcohol and drug
abusing adolescents and identify the unique characteristics of adolescents that
have developed problems in their life as a result of substance use, abuse, or
dependency. Participants will be able to determine the differences between
inpatient and outpatient treatment for this population and recognize the role
and responsibilities that the staff must provide. The course includes
information on the juvenile justice system and the legal and ethical issues that
staff may confront while working with this population. Counselors will be able
to customize the assessment and treatment planning process for this population
and identify specific counseling skills that will prove effective for
adolescents.

HS #710 Older Adults and Substance Abuse
The problems and ramifications of substance abuse in the older adult population is the focus of this workshop. Prevalence rates, etiology, the assessment process, coexisting disorders, Treatment strategies, the importance of the treatment milieu, motivational factors, case management, and effective support systems of this population are included within the home study course.

HS #380 Part I: Coexisting Disorders/Concepts & Definitions
The goal of this course is to provide an overview of the most common coexisting disorders that are found within the substance abuse client population. The course provides specific definitions and concepts of coexisting disorders and explains the term dual diagnosis. The course describes the relationship between alcohol and drug use and common psychiatric symptoms and disorders. It also includes the similarities and differences between mental health and addiction treatment and the linkages that are necessary between the two. Also included are screening, assessment, referral, and case management techniques for the client population. Staff training, program policy, and linkages to the criminal justice system and social services network are also included.

HS #381 Part II: Coexisting Disorders/Specific Psychiatric Disorders
This course describes the disorders that account for the majority of psychiatric problems seen in the clients with dual disorders. The course includes the definitions, diagnoses, prevalence rates, stages of assessment, treatment strategies, issues, and goals. The specific disorders include mood disorders, anxiety disorders, personality disorders including borderline personality, antisocial personality, narcissistic personality, passive-aggressive personality and psychotic disorders.
